Mandatory Cold Weather Life Jacket Use

In 2012, the following regulation was established:

November 1 through April 30 while underway or at anchor on a boat that is less than 16 feet in length or in any canoe or kayak, all persons shall wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD). Cold water shock is a major factor in boating fatalities when the water temperature is less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. A life jacket greatly increases your chance for survival in cold water and increases the amount of time for you to be rescued.
